Kaitlyn Mitchell

Kaitlyn Mitchell (she/her) is a PhD candidate in the Department of Biology. She is eager to leverage her knowledge in ecology and infectious disease transmission to address outstanding questions communities have regarding their local ecosystems, conservation, and health. Much of her research is based in Madagascar where she collaborates with Malagasy scientists to understand the impact of an invasive crayfish on a parasitic disease called schistosomiasis. She is also interested in local ecosystems and work that will increase diversity in both ecology and the outdoor recreational community in the US. She has served as a teaching assistant for “Human and Planetary Health” at Stanford where she helped facilitate communication between leaders in human and environmental health with students. She has supported many women in STEM and first-generation, low-income students through 1-1 mentoring, and she participates in several outreach programs to communicate her science to a wide audience of children and adults. In her free time, Kaitlyn enjoys tabletop games, mountain biking, and walks with her dog.
