
Oliver Nguyen
Oliver Nguyen (they/them) is a PhD Student at Stanford's Department of Biology and the Center for Conservation Biology. They are interested in environmental justice and urban ecology, particularly working directly and co-developing research questions with local community partners. Currently they are researching how historical urban planning policies (redlining) has impacted wildlife communities in cities and people’s access to nature. They have a background in data science and geospatial data analysis, as well as creating interactive maps and illustrations to weave storytelling and science. They have worked on projects ranging from water rights protection and Indigenous co-management of the Missouri River Basin led by the Brave Heart Society to community advocacy in redistricting and training voters to use online tools like Districtr to map out their communities. They are passionate about activism, mentoring transgender youth, and empowering First-Gen/Low-income communities. They hold a BS degree in Biology and Environmental Science from Tufts University. In their free time, they enjoy collecting dead things and drawing comics.
