
Tami Gjorgjieva
Tami Gjorgjieva (she/her), from Skopje, North Macedonia, is a PhD candidate in Genetics at Stanford's School of Medicine. She is passionate about decolonizing genomic science and helping to develop research and regulatory infrastructures in developing regions. To this end, she co-organized the Winter Institute in Statistical Genetics, a program for trainees in genetics across the Middle East and Africa, and co-founded the Network of Students in Medicine and Health, the first inter-university student organization in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Tami is interested in human genetics, as well as its ethical, legal and policy implications. As an interdisciplinary research fellow at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), she studies the population genetics of Emiratis in the UAE, their attitudes to genetic research, and the portability of genetics-related regulations into an Islamic context of bioethics. She has also worked in statistical genetics and empirical ethics as a Predoctoral Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and Geisinger Health. As an undergraduate, Tami served as President of Student Government, and was a part of the Competitive Debate Team. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from NYUAD. She enjoys social dancing, rock climbing, running, and all sorts of adventure trips.
